IJAB - Fachstelle für Internationale Jugendarbeit der Bundesrepublik Deutschland e.V.
The session "Youth, Peace and Security" will discuss the implementation of UN Resolution 2250 and a panel of young people and representatives of youth work and civil society will exchange views on the potential of participation in peace and security issues.
The ongoing war in Ukraine has brought issues such as war, security and peace to the centre of Europe. For many young people, life has changed noticeably. This makes UN Security Council Resolution 2250, which emphasises the positive role of young people in peace and security processes, even more important. The Youth, Peace and Security Agenda (YPS) calls for the involvement of young people at all levels - from peacebuilding to the implementation of security measures. YPS actors emphasise the importance of involving young people in democratic negotiation processes and enabling them to play an active role in shaping them.
The session will address these issues: After a keynote speech in English, various YPS actors will report on their experiences with the implementation of Resolution 2250 in a panel discussion (in German). Anja Jokić from the National Youth Council of Serbia (KOMS) / Advisory Council on Youth will describe the current situation in Serbia, identify necessary steps and present her own initiatives.
The focus will then turn to Germany. The YPS agenda emphasises that its implementation is important not only in armed conflict regions, but everywhere. We will discuss what framework conditions are needed to effectively implement Resolution 2250 in Germany and how this can contribute to strengthening democratic participation and the resilience of democracies. Specific examples from youth work show that peace work often takes place in everyday life - but is rarely recognised as such. Whether in guided discussion groups, joint activities or sending delegates to the United Nations - there are numerous opportunities to offer young people spaces for engagement.
Representatives from the German Coalition for Youth, Peace and Security, youth work and youth organisations will discuss how this can be achieved and what prerequisites are needed. Lisa Mastiaux from the German Coalition for Youth, Peace and Security e.V. and Isabel Rutkowski from the Catholic Rural Youth Movement of Germany e.V. will be among the panellists.
